Open Question: Help advise a teen in pursuit of an emancipation.?
I am 16 and I’ve decided I’m going to work for an emancipation.

Now please, I understand that there will be the mutual urge to say “don’t jump”, in almost every single search I’ve done that’s been the general consensus of the repliers, to not move out and to accommodate to whatever conditions there are that would make a teenager such as myself want an emancipation.

That being said, I want any advice you can give me. Just please don’t make the entire reply about how I need to not do this.

Anyways, this is the plan so far.
-Obtain a job, one that i can progress in.
-Save money, about five-thousand dollars.
-Exert gratuitous amounts of effort into my work/education.
-Calculate expenses. Possibly find a room mate
-Begin emancipation process. (I.e. discuss with Mother, query courts)

That’s the general idea.
In addition, I’ve composed a coarse list of what I’ll expect to pay into, as far as expenses.
-Living accommodations (Apartment, etc..)
-Utilities
-Renter’s insurance
-Bills
-Tax? (Not sure how taxes work exactly)
-Cable/Internet (Not completely necessary, although convenient)
-Car insurance/Maintenance/Fuel
-Food (Food stamps maybe?)
-Health insurance/Co pays

It would be much appreciated if you were to advise me on what else I will need to pay for, and if all of the things on my current list are even necessary.
I need all the advice I can get, please help by giving detailed responses.

I realize that I’ve not said much about who I am, and the reason behind this is that people have a tendency to focus on my tale and my back ground rather than the issue I would like assistance with.
Sorry if this bothers anybody, but it was an endeavor to recieve better results.

Thank you for your time,
Cheers.
I also want to know how to get the cheapest apartment style living available to me.
I.e, can i buy a one bedroom apartment and have two people live there?

Open Question: Who pays for my personal items damaged by water leak?
The apartment above us got a water leak and water drained into our apartment. Our personal items were damaged by that. Also, landlord told us that we might move to another room.
If those who living in the apartment are responsible for that, will they pay for our personal items and expense for moving?
We don’t have time to take care of it by ourselves, so we are wondering.
We don’t have any renter’s insurance.
Thanks.
Water leak was caused by the apartment above us.

Open Question: Renting a car in Puerto Rico?
I will be going to Puerto Rico in a little over a week and am trying to decide about a car rental. Not whether or not to do it because we will be renting a car (we have hotels in a few different places), but about what options to get with the rental. I currently have three reservations. One is for Thrifty, one is Budget, one is Enterprise. I am trying to decide which to cancel and what insurance/options I need. My insurance- I have full coverage- covers me in Puerto Rico. My husband’s insurance company- though he also has full coverage- does not cover Puerto Rico. He will be doing most of the driving (because of what I have read about the driving there I am afraid to drive there, esp. in San Juan).

So…
THRIFTY
Rental is at airport and we would have it from when we land until we leave. Total Base Rate for a compact car is $136.45 (5 days @ $27.29/day with Unlimited Miles)…this does not include their extra options of the Loss Damage Waiver ($15/day), Personal Protection Plan ($6/day), Supplemental Liability Ins ($8/day). I believe they also charge extra for additional drivers even if the additional driver is a spouse.
Thrifty requires the purchase of Loss Damage Waiver if you don’t show proof that your insurance will cover a rental car in PR. From their website: LDW is Optional If customer is paying with a credit card that extends coverage options to PUERTO RICO or renter presents verification of personal insurance coverages at rental counter. Personal insurance must be accompanied by a letter stating that the customers insurance policy will cover the rental car in Puerto Rico. All credit cards and insurances are subject to verification and acceptance at rental counter. If neither stipulation is met -
customer will be required to purchase LDW cost USD 14.95 – 16.95/day. Optional Third Party Liability cost USD 7.95/day If LDW is declined is MANDATORY for customer to purchase the Third Party Liability and would be responsible for the full value of the vehicle.

BUDGET
Same car class, same rental period is $234. Spouse is free as additional driver. Their add-on options are:
Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) Protects you if car is damaged or stolen. 19.95/day
Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) 10.95/day
Personal Accident and Effects (PAE) 4.95/day

ENTERPRISE
I have this rental set up as picking up the morning after we arrive because it would be $300 for the same rental period as the others but by picking it up the next morning instead, the rental is only $97 for an intermediate class car. Spouse is free. Their only add on option is the LDW for $20/day.

I think enterprise is the best option but my husband doesn’t want to deal with going back to the airport to get the car/cabs/etc.

My real question- is the LDW really worth the cost? Considering the driving style there? And if you have rented a car at SJU, what was a good company to go through? I have read about thrifty being out of cars despite reservations, etc..
