Open Question: My boyfriend…keep him or let him go?
My boyfriend is 30 and I’m 36 but look 25. We recently moved together from Seattle to a smaller town in Texas. We relocated for my job and I began working immediately. He was laid off from his job 8 months ago and shortly after losing his job his lease ended and we moved in together. We were both unable to find new jobs in Seattle. I was unemployed for 6 months so we were unemployed together.
Now we have been in Texas for 2 months and he still hasn’t found a job. I’m fine with him not having a job and make enough money to pay the bills and live comfortably. I would still be renting the same apartment, paying the cable and electricity whether he was there or not and really my only additional costs are food and entertainment. However, he seems a bit down and depressed being unemployed so long and really isn’t looking as hard for his job as I think he should be. He does look on the internet but usually sleeps most days until noon, stays up most nights until 2:00 AM and typically only spends an hour looking for jobs and the rest of his time eating and watching tv.
This week I am out of town attending a training class for work. He is home alone. Doesn’t currently have a cell phone because he doesn’t have a job. I offered to get him a cell phone but he said he would rather not have one and have me pay his bill until he has a job and can pay it himself. He doesn’t currently have a car because he could not support a car payment, insurance or gas without a job. He is a medical assistant so does have a career and there is a good chance that he will eventually find a job where we live now with a couple of large medical centers in the area.
I love him a lot however believe I love him more than he loves me. He has never bought me flowers or a gift. Hasn’t had a job for most of the time so I am understanding. When he did have some money in his pocket he took me to dinner and a movie but has never bought me a gift or even flowers. I feel selfish that I want that but I have been feeding him and putting a roof over his head for 8 months. I’ve missed more than a few manicures and pedicures to pay the bills and feed us and entertain us!
I have not heard from him since I left town on Sunday night for my business trip. He does not have a cell phone or any money but does have access to a computer from the business center in our apartment complex. I took the laptop with me on my trip. It’s now Wednesday at noon and have not gotten an email or heard from him. I’m disappointed he hasn’t made an effort to contact me.
He is very affectionate and loving. When on the couch he holds my hand or cuddles my while watching a movie. When I come home he is there to kiss me and when I leave in the morinng he kisses me good-bye. I haven’t had to wash the dishes in 8 months as he does every dish and runs the dishwasher. He makes the bed everyday and folds my laundry when I leave it in the drier. We live on the third floor and he will empty every bag or box out of my car for me and carry up to the apartment.
So, with all this information…is he a keeper or should I let him go and move on?
