Resolved Question: Homeowners insurance question about “unpermitted space”?
We’re looking at a home where the previous owner finished the attic. Never got a permit for the work, only the electrical.
If we bought it and did not get a permit retroactively, could our homeowners insurance deny a claim based on this?
Voting Question: How long will my homeowner’s insurance be flagged after I lower my deductable?
I’ve been told by a reputable roofer that the damage to my roof can be covered by hazard insurance despite the fact that the roof has been in poor condition for quite some time. I currently have a deductable of $5,000 (the roof will cost around $8,000) and was thinking of lowering it prior to having the roofing claim filed. However, I don’t want them to deny the claim because I lowered my deductable recently. How long do you reccomend waiting? Are there other risks to lowering my deductable and then filing a claim?
Resolved Question: Will my insurance company drop me or rates go up drastically for a 2nd claim in a yr?
Last year I filed a homeowners claim for a new oven. I had been steaming the wallpaper above it and water dripped down into it and shorted out the circuit board. I was paid around $500 for the claim. Now I spilled stain on my new carpet (its 2 yrs. old) and I filed a claim but I haven’t spoken to them yet. I have started to worry that it will come back to haunt us with a higher premium. Does anyone know how it will affect us? The first claim wasn’t for much money. Also, when/if they come out to my house will they look around for other things to drop me? Our rates went up about $350 this past yr. and I was told it was just that rates went up in general.
I have a carpet steamer and believe me, this stain is not coming out.

The argument for the AIG bonuses is that their job contracts are structured so that the bulk of compensation is the bonus. Why can’t they get a job structured on salary instead of bonuses? I’m sure I understand the basic answer, but someone who knows better tell me.
