Open Question: How to temporary patch a round hole in my mobile home roof.?
While pulling monster tree limbs off of my roof, from an ice storm, I discovered my roof had been speared by a branch. the hole goes through the roof and is about 1 inch wide, straight through a shingle and the insulation. I’m good with my hands but I know nothing about roofing. I just need to patch it while I contact the insurance company, but its going to rain tomorrow.

Open Question: what would you take in a bushfire?
i’m not sure how much coverage this is getting in the rest of the world, but the big thing in the news in Australia at the moment is the bushfires in and near Victoria. it’s terrible. the death count is 130+ (and counting), with many more missing. it’s worse than the Ash Wednesday fires. men, women, famous people, children, babies, not to mention pets and wildlife. over 750 homes have been lost. so many people just have the clothes on their back, and some a car. although on the news they had footage of cars that had completely melted from the fire. melted!
some witnesses say that the fire was 40m tall, ‘a tsunami of fire’. they travel extremely fast and are scary as hell.
one victim, an elderly man, was sleeping, and woke to the sound of fire and smell of smoke. when he discovered his house was a fire, he rushed outside without enough time to collect any possessions or wallet, not even clothes. a few moments after he got out of his house it was engulfed in fire.
they deemed it ‘Australia’s worst natural disaster’. our prime minister was just speaking, but was torn apart and couldn’t finish his speech. millions have been donated, but it’s still not enough.

people have very little time to decide whether to flee, or stay and try to defend their home. i know a lot of you live in urban parts of the world and have never experienced a bushfire. bushfires are a big threat here in AU. there’s a total fire ban here at the moment. luckily some people have been arrested for lighting fires. a lot of them were intentionally lit.

some of you may think that it’s safer to stay at home. that is far from true. unfortunately, a lot of the people that decide to defend their home don’t make it. even those who flee have been killed. it’s so sad.

a big question is where to go if you decide to flee. the best place i can think of would be the city, but it would likely be deadlocked because everyone would go there. besdes, a lot of the people in the fires live no where near cities. the next best thing would be the beach, if there was one near you. the river wouldn’t be bad either, as you could wade out.

personally, i would flee. most people have under 20, 10, or even 5 minutes to get away from their house, but if you were caught in a bushfire where you had 12 hours or so, and you knew where to go, what would you pack (after families, pets)?

i would choose the obvious things, clothes, water, maybe canned food, toiletries. (you don’t know if you’re going to loose your home)
my real question is, what personal things would you take?
for me – probably photos, a little money, important documents (healthcare, insurance docs ect.), my camera, mobile phone (safety), and hard drive from computer (important docs and life’s work [photos and stuff]).

you?

(really sorry for the long question, if you’ve read it all)

btw, please donate to help victims of it.

Voting Question: Bankruptcy or debt consolidation?
I was divorced last fall, in Texas, where I still reside. My attorney refused to ask my x for disclosure, so I did not know that my x had $15,000 in credit card debt. The divorce papers say she’s liable for debts she incurred from the day I walked out on her, and for all debts that are in her name, which these 3 revolving accounts are. But, she hasn’t paid and yesterday, after getting turned down for credit, I checked my credit online and found out that two of her credit card companies have put charge-offs on my credit, a third one is about to, because she’s 190 days past due on it, and she never paid the phone bill so Embarq has put a charge-off on my credit, too, for $150, which is the least of my worries, but my credit score is barely over 400 now. Everything else on my credit shows “paid on time/as agreed”. I’ve never made a late payment on anything my whole life.

I’m considering bankruptcy, but I own two homes (one is a rent house, both are mobile homes). The industry I work in is winding down and I had planned on moving into the landlord business. I’d planned to purchase an RV park, not only as a new career, but as my only retirement income, as well. I’ll be 50 years old in a few months. I don’t have years left over to build more credit.
Suing my x for whatever she owes me will not do any good, because she refuses to work, doesn’t have a job skill and will surely never pay me once I win in court.
My income is excellent, and I may make too much for Chapter 7. Also, one of my homes is in a mobile home park inside a city limits. My main home sits on 2 acres in a subdivision, outside of city limits. I’m concerned that if I file bankruptcy, I won’t be able to keep both houses. I also have two cars. One is a junker that my X trashed and gave back to me while the divorce was still pending. I owe less than $2,000 on it. The other car is very nice, only 2 years old, and I owe a lot on it. I’m paying on all this, on time. My only concern is losing my homes and the good car.
Personally, I have no other bills besides the two house payments and the two car payments & their insurance. I have no revolving accounts.
Given my plans for retirement and my unsteady job security right now, which do you think I should do, file or consolidate just her bad bills and pay them off over time?
