Resolved Question: how much will i be billed for hitting a fire hydrant?
i was helping a friend move and he asked me to move his u-haul. he had it parked right up against a fire hydrant and i never saw it. im waiting to get a bill from the city for the cost to fix it.
i went and looked at the hydrant the next day and saw that the pipe connecting it to the main is what broke. the pipe is about 2 feet long and cast iron. it has a cut/groove at the top and one at the bottom (lines for it to break at im assuming) and it broke right at the bottom groove. all they need to do is replace the cast iron pipe. is this gonna cost me a lot? it was my Friends uhaul and they didn’t have insurance. my car and renters insurance are all on the same policy through state farm and my wife made my deductible $1000. basically, im trying to avoid claiming it with my insurance and having to pay the $1000 AND have my insurance go up. ive heard a few different prices now and they are all VERY different! anyone done this before?
Open Question: help with an economics project?
i need to know a general amount for renters insurnace, car insurance with only one car, credit card bill for a rarely used card, health insurance, and electricity for 3 people. oh and how much are monthly care payments on a car that costs 11995?
PLEASE…..
Voting Question: Is this illegal for the home owners to do?
okay, so this description is really long, but I think you need to hear the WHOLE story to determine if this is legal or not.
Back in 92, my grandparents lost their house. They filed bankruptcy and it was foreclosed on. A year later, some people bought it. This house is kind of out in the country, to make the story more understandable. My Great-grandparents (mother and father to my grandmother who originally owned the home) live next door, and always have. One day when I was about 10, in 2000, I was walking on my grandma’s property, in her field. The dog of the person who bought the house got loose and came after me. Since it wasn’t on the dog owner’s property, the dog warden filed charges against the guy (the dog bite was severe enough that they HAD to so that they would register it as a dangerous dog). I had to witness at court. The same day, the owners got scared and called their insurance. With in hours of court being over, the insurance company called my parents and offered a settlement to stop any action of suing. Of course, we accepted their offer. (we weren’t even planning on suing). Well after about 2002, the owners left (they are a military family). They’ve been renting out the house ever since. Since november, they’ve been trying to rent again. This house is HUGE (about 4500 sq ft). So, my grandparents and my parents proposed that my parents rent it, and my grandparents help them out and live there. They wanted their home back. The renters said yes, because up until signing, they can’t know the identity of the people living there for discrimination purposes. My parents were supposed to sign tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock. At 5, the real estate agent faxed the papers to the owners (they live in a different state). They saw my mom’s signature and name, and backed out. Their reason was that the house was left in chaos when we moved out before they owned it (which is not true).
My questions are: 1. How would their response even be a valid reason to back out of the contract? They have no proof that WE made the mess, though there was none. Isn’t that also discrimination?
2. Beings how we never pressed charges against them, if that DOES come up, (we know it’s the real reason), they can’t hold that against us, right?
3. Could we sue them for discrimination or backing out of the contract at last minute. We were supposed to move in tomorrow, after signing. We had hired movers, gotten schools set up, gotten electricity ready to be turned over, cable was supposed to come tomorrow. We have fees for all that stuff. Some we can’t get out of. We paid the first month’s rent and a deposit already. Can we sue them for the cost of that stuff?
They had a rental contract signed on the house. The contract that we were signing now was the owner’s agreeing to the maintenance. Discrimination is not just against age or race or something. It can be against any person for any reason.
Should I get renter’s insurance? I don’t own anything except for tattoos, cats, and a laptop. Seriously.
