The economy is down and people are scrambling to save money on everything from groceries to their morning coffee, but have you taken a look at your car insurance policy in a while? The truth is your insurance policy comes up every six months and every time you have an opportunity to get a new rate, update your coverage or start a policy with a new company and save money every month that you may have never thought of before.

If you don’t tell your insurance company to give you a better rate they will just keep your policy rolling and keep billing you every month or every six months (depending on how you pay normally) and if car insurance rates go down then they rake in extra profits because you let them. Of course if rates go up you want to keep your current policy, but more often than not you can save money if you shop around and if you don’t you are missing out big time.

I know most people would rather have a root canal than to shop for car insurance but the world is changed and we no longer have to meet with salespeople and fill out forms to get an insurance quotes, now the bigger insurance companies (and some of the smaller ones) have websites that will give you a quote with just a few questions and about 10 to 15 minutes of your time that’s not so bad is it? Heck, you can roll out of bed and shop for a new insurance policy while drinking your morning coffee.

Just like every department store acts as though their prices are the best and they cant be beat insurance companies will do the same so don’t just take their word for it that they have the best prices, comparison shop them against two or three other companies to make sure you are saving the most money each time. Comparing companies should take you less than an hour combined so make sure to take full advantage of a very easy way to save money.

Bottom line, if you want to save money in this tough economy take a look at the policy you currently have and do some shopping the next time it is up. Just be sure that you get the same coverage and don’t just base your purchase on price, you’ll regret it if you ever need your coverage!
